A thousandth of an inch, which is the unit coatings are specified in. Wet film thickness is what can be measured with a gauge while the coating is still wet; dry film thickness is what the specification usually asks for and what is left once the solvent or water has gone. The gap between the two is why a coat applied thin enough to look neat can still fail the spec.
