The agreement between you and the customer about what will be done, for how much, and on what terms. A verbal agreement is often still a contract, but it is a contract nobody can prove. Above certain values, consumer-protection law in many provinces and states requires a residential contract to be in writing and to contain particular items — and the threshold and the required items vary, so a template bought for one jurisdiction is not automatically valid in the next.

The rule behind contract is set by the province or state the work is in, and the versions do not agree with one another. We have described the shape of it and deliberately not named a deadline, a cap or a percentage — check the rule where you work, or ask someone who practises there.
