Cash, e-transfer, cheque — and Zelle, Venmo or Cash App in the US
The ways a client can pay you without a card, by country: which ones you can switch on, what each needs from you, and the “How to pay” block the invoice prints with the address to send to.
Not every client pays by card, and an invoice that only says Accepted: e-transfer still leaves them phoning to ask where to send it. Settings → Payments → Payment methods you accept lists the offline methods that exist in your country, each as a switch; switching one on asks for the detail a client needs — the Interac address, the Zelle number, who to make the cheque out to — and the invoice then prints a How to pay block with those details and the invoice number as the reference.
Which methods you are offered
The list follows the country on your company record. A Canadian company sees Interac e-Transfer, PayPal, Cheque and Cash. A US company sees Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, Bank transfer (ACH), PayPal, Check and Cash — Interac does not exist in the United States, so it is never offered there, and a US company that signed up with the Canadian default has e-transfer dropped and cheque read as check the first time it saves. Anywhere else the list is PayPal, cheque and cash.
| Method | Country | What you enter |
|---|---|---|
| Interac e-Transfer | Canada | The email or phone number to send to; optionally the security question and answer, or a tick for auto-deposit |
| Cheque / Check | Everywhere | Nothing required — cheques are made out to your company name; a payee and a mailing address if you want them printed |
| Cash | Everywhere | Nothing |
| PayPal | Everywhere | Your PayPal email or PayPal.Me link |
| Zelle | US | The email or phone number enrolled with Zelle |
| Venmo | US | Your Venmo handle |
| Cash App | US | Your $cashtag |
| Bank transfer (ACH) | US | Bank name, routing number and account number |
What the invoice prints
Every method that is on appears under How to pay on the invoice PDF, in the invoice email and on the client portal, in the language the invoice was written in, after Pay online by card when Stripe is connected. Each line says what to do — *Send an Interac e-Transfer to pay@yourcompany.ca. Auto-deposit is on — no security question needed. Use INV-2026-0042 as the reference.* — so the client has nothing to ask. A quote whose payment terms name a deposit prints the same block under its payment-terms cards, with the quote number.
Bank transfer (ACH) details print on the PDF and in the portal only. The email says *Bank transfer details are on the invoice* — an account number does not belong in a message that gets forwarded.
The block is fixed when the invoice is first sent. Changing your e-transfer address next month changes the next invoice, not the one a client is already paying from.
Switching a method on
- Open Settings → Payments and find Payment methods you accept.
- Switch a method on. Its fields appear underneath; the ones marked * are required.
- Press Save. A method that is on without its required detail is refused with a sentence — *E-transfer is on but has no address.* — and nothing changes until it is filled in.
Switch everything off and the invoice prints no How to pay block at all — the email then says *Please get in touch to arrange payment* where the button would be, if Stripe is not connected either.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep an address on file for a method I have switched off?
Yes. The details stay saved; only methods that are on are checked and printed.
Where does the cheque payee come from?
Your company name, unless you type a different payee — a trading name, a numbered company.
A client paid by Zelle. How do I record it?
Record Payment on the invoice offers your country's methods, Zelle included, and the statement prints the word you picked. See Record a cash, cheque or e-transfer payment.
